Southgate looks to Mido return

A BOXING day bashing at Birmingham has set the alarm bells ringing at Middlesbrough again.
A Stewart Downing own goal, a Mikael Forssell strike and Gary McSheffrey's late penalty condemned Boro to defeat.

They are now just three points clear of the relegation zone and manager Gareth Southgate has admitted his side are missing their injured Egyptian striker Mido who has been sidelined since October.Southgate would love to have him back in the side as soon as possible but has admitted he cannot set a date for his return.
"He has been out with a stress injury and it is difficult to put a time on his return," said Southgate.
"He is back in training but it is not a ligament injury where you can put a definite time span on it."It is a case of building up in training. We have to make sure that we are doing it at the right level."I cannot see him playing a part in the Christmas period. He is desperately keen to do so but just because we have had a couple of bad results we cannot alter our thinking on what is right for him and us."It is an injury he has had on and off and it flared up again soon after he joined us."This means we have lost three strikers this year and highlights the shortage of experience in that area.

"We are in a position in the table we do not want to be in. But we are realistic of what can be achieved."It is only hard work and endeavour, and better quality than we showed against Birmingham, that will get us through this difficult period.

"And Southgate admitted the Blues had been well worth their win."We didn't deserve anything from the game," he said. "I thought we were very, very poor in the first half and didn't get out of the traps."I've heard people use the phase 'we have turned the corner.

' I knew we hadn't and the evidence is there for everyone to see. There is a tremendous amount of hard work to be done."I think we let ourselves down because 3-0 is a very poor result. Now we have to roll up our sleeves up and work together to get ourselves back on track. We have to go to Portsmouth and do that."

Mido back on training

Shawky In But No Mido For Egypt
Shawky has been named in Egypt's provisional squad for next month's African Nations Cup in Ghana - but his Boro team-mate Mido has not.
Shawky is included even though he has yet to start a Barclays Premier League game for Boro, while Mido has been out of action since the defeat at Chelsea on October 20 with a pubic bone problem.
However, he is now back in training and there is a chance he will play a part in the competition, especially if Egypt make the latter stages.
Manager Gareth Southgate said: "That could change, but it's unlikely that Mido is going to play before the middle of January so he won't really have played any games, so they will have that in mind."
The tournament begins on January 20 and the final takes place in Accra on February 10.

Southgate defends injured Mido

Gareth Southgate has defended Egyptian striker Mido, who has only played for Middlesbrough eight times since leaving Spurs for £6 million in August.
The ‘Boro manager insists that Mido’s injury has interrupted an otherwise promising season.
"People have suggested Mido has not been a good signing, yet he scored two goals in his first two games and he's been pretty much injured since,” Southgate said.
"There have been bogus stories about him going missing from the training ground, which doesn't help. It's something that has frustrated him and me.

Mido has been injured for two months, and Southgate says his recovery is on schedule.

"I know how much he wants to get back and he's on course, but he has to see if there's any reaction. He's frustrated because he wants to be out there scoring goals and he was thrilled to bits with the way he started here. Now he feels down because he can't contribute.''
However, he still admitted that he is likely to look for forwards in the January transfer window.
"We've been caught a bit short. We could maybe have taken another striker, but it wouldn't have been anyone we would have had long-term faith in.
"I have to carry the can for that, but we've been hit with injuries in that area and, after January, we have to make sure we have plenty of cover.''

Mido waits on Egypt decision

MIDO today revealed that he was open minded about his potential participation in the African Nations Cup.

The Boro striker, who is making a rapid recovery from his pubic bone injury, is likely to be named provisionally in the Egypt squad for the tournament, which runs from January 20-February 10 in Ghana.

If Mido takes part he could be away from Teesside for up to a month, because the Egyptian team will be gathering for preparation work early in January.

Mido told the Evening Gazette: “I have spoken to the Egyptian Federation and to the manager and we agree that it is too early to say what will happen at the moment.

“It would be difficult for me to go to the African Cup if I was not fully fit. I need to be a lot fitter before I can make a decision.

“If I am to play well for my country I need to be ready and able to perform.
“So we will have to wait what happens over the next two or three weeks.”

Mido is gradually building up his fitness with twice daily work-outs at Rockliffe Park.
He is not yet ready to return to full training, but hopes to be back early next year.

His African Nations Cup decision will then ultimately be taken out of his hands.
If he is fully fit, and available, then Egypt would have every right to call him up.

Mido : I will get goals

Mido insist Middlesbrough will not need a new striker in January.
The Egyptian international has been limited to just seven games since his £6million move from Tottenham in the summer.
He is not expected to return from injury until January - but he remains up-beat about Boro's striking issues.
Hope

"When I come back fit, I don't think there will be a need for the club to bring in another striker," he said.

"We have Jeremie [Aliadiere] working his socks off and I believe the goals will come from him.

"Tuncay is also a class striker. He's a guy we can depend on.
"The gaffer will have to decide whether he wants to bring anyone in and how much competition he wants, and I can understand that while I am not fit.

"But I am sure that I can get back soon and start scoring goals for the team.
"People say that we did not replace Yakubu and Viduka, but nobody would be saying that if I wasn't injured.

"Yakubu didn't want to stay, Viduka didn't want to stay and, while they are very good players, if players don't want to stay then you can't keep them.
"It was the same with me at Spurs. I wanted to leave and I was happy to come here.
"I know all about the Premier League, but Aliadiere needed time to settle in and for Tuncay it was a move to a different culture and a different type of football. Tuncay also speaks a different language.
"When [Zinedine] Zidane joined Juventus they were talking about letting him go after six months. Fortunately for them, they stuck with him.
"Tuncay is scoring goals now and that has helped his confidence."

Injury

Mido is hopeful he will be back sooner than expected.
"The medical staff are very pleased with my progress," he told the Evening Gazette.
"I am working really hard on the physical side and doing everything right to get fit. I believe I will be back much sooner than the original estimates. Maybe three weeks, no more, I hope.
"But it's one of those injuries where you can not set a time scale.
"It's in the bone. It's more difficult to deal with than a muscle injury, or a tendon injury.
"I played in some games where I wasn't 100 per cent fit.
"I had no pre-season with Spurs but I went straight into the games here because they needed me. I picked up the injury against Sunderland and I played in games while I was carrying the injury and this made it worse.
"It was probably not the most sensible thing at to do, but at the time both Jeremie Aliadiere and Tuncay were injured and I felt the team needed me.

"I was the most available striker, if you like, even though I was not 100 per cent.
"Some players choose not to play in those situations, some do.

"It's been very frustrating. My injury came at such a bad time. I feel responsible towards the manager and the team.

"The manager brought me here and I want to play football for him and do well. I wish I was on the pitch. I feel that if I was, I would make a big contribution.

"I know that I can score goals when I come back."

Southgate : Mido Could Be Out Until New Year

GARETH SOUTHGATE has revealed that it may be into the New Year before Boro fans see Mido in a Boro shirt again.
Three different specialists have advised Boro that Mido's stress reaction in the pubic bone is a difficult condition to treat and that the only way the player will recover is through rest and rehabilitation.
The specialists agree that a timescale for Mido's recovery is difficult to predict but it seems he is unlikely to play until 2008.
Southgate said: "We were recommended to try a course of injections but unfortunately these have failed to improve his symptoms.

"On the advice of specialists, we have therefore decided that the best course of action is for Mido to have a period of rest and rehabilitation.
"Due to the nature of the injury, it's very difficult to put a timescale on it but what Mido needs to do now is rest from playing football or training with the team.
"The aim of the rehabilitation during this period will be to strengthen the areas around the injury and in particular to work on his core stability.
"Our medical team will work closely with him over the weeks ahead to ensure we eventually have him back fit and raring to go.
"It is frustrating for Mido and for the rest of us to lose him in this way because we all want him out on the pitch and scoring goals, but the most important thing is that we resolve the problem even if unfortunately it takes longer than we would like."

Good news from treatment room .

THERE was better news from the treatment room this afternoon for Julio Arca, Mido, Jonathan Woodgate and Andrew Taylor.
Arca has been out since September with medial ligament damage but is now back in full training although Gareth Southgate says the Aston Villa match may come too early for the playmaker.
But Woodgate will be hoping to be ready for the weekend after missing the last two games after damaging his hamstring.

Mido is also running following his groin injury but it is too early to say whether he will be available for weekend selection.

Andrew Taylor returned from England U21 duty prematurely due to the foot injury that forced him off against Bolton a fortnight ago. The youngster is also running but will not join full training until Thursday at the earliest.

And there was also updates for two of Boro's long term injury victims.
Robert Huth came through 90 minutes unscathed as the Reserves beat Glasgow Rangers 2-0 on Friday too add to his 60 minutes the previous week against Manchester United. He is still building up match fitness.
Brad Jones however is still some weeks away following his leg injury.

Mido is here ..

The rumour mill has been fuelled by Internet sites re-reporting inaccurate information and while Southgate admits he finds the situation frustrating, he says it is a sign of the times.

"Everything gathers momentum at this time and with the Internet being how it is now, people can print anything without foundation and a story can build up out of nothing.

"There have been stories about Mido going back to Egypt without permission, which is nonsense.

"He had an injection into his injury and we told him to go home because he had to rest for a week.

"Most things are a bit of truth, a bit of fabrication and a bit of gloss.
"It's difficult for players because they read articles about players coming or going or changes happening and we haven't made any decisions on any of these things."

Mido Reveals All

Are you glad you came to Teesside and are you surprised by how much the fans love you?

What do you think of the Middlesbrough support after coming from Tottenham and having a full houses almost every week? Does it affect your game?

Mido: I am very grateful to the Middlesbrough fans for the way they have supported me. It is very important for a player to feel he is loved by the fans. All players like to play in front of big crowds and although the stadium is not full, the Boro fans have shown they can give great support.

What are your aspirations for Middlesbrough Football Club this season? Where do you expect us to finish or where would you like us to finish?

Mido: Obviously I would like us to finish as high as we can, I came here to help the club achieve a good placing and I think we can get that. I don't think top four is realistic, but top 10 definitely.

All Egypt is proud of Mido. Do you think you can be the top striker this league? Can you be a 20-goal-a-season striker for Boro? How many goals do you think you will score this season?

Mido: I never set myself targets, I just try to score as many goals as I can. Some people say you should get two or three goals against this team or that team, but it's silly. It is hard to score a goal and if I score just one goal in a game that is good. But obviously I try to score more.

What about your hopes in the future and in your private life?

Mido: I hope that my son grows up to be a respectful young man and that my family remain healthy. That is the most important thing for me.

If you could pick anyone to have as your perfect strike partner who would it be? Please don't say Yakubu or Viduka!

Mido: Robbie Keane

Your performance is very nice but can you play with Tuncay Sanli?

Mido: We are all still getting used to each other and the way we play. There are some very good players at this club and I feel for sure that we can all play together, whatever team is picked.

Who was your best mate at Spurs and who was the hardest player you faced?

Mido: Robbie Keane and Hossam Ghaly were the players I got on best with. The hardest player? That is a tough one, there have been many, but maybe Fabio Cannavaro.

Who is the best player you have played with?

Mido: I have played with some great players. Remember I started at Ajax and there were some great players there. Players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Christian Chivu, Rafael van der Vaart and Andy van der Meyde. Then at Tottenham there was Robbie Keane.

We see you playing football in the UK very, very well but when you come with our national team you aren't the same. Do you know why?

What are the probabilities for Egypt to win the African Cup of Nations?

I greatly respect your choice to join the Egyptian national team whenever needed, although it obviously has a negative effect on your club stats and post-tournament performance. Will you do the same when the next African Cup of Nations comes around?

Mido: I think things are different when you play for your club and your country. The games and the players are not the same. I don't know why this is, but that is what I feel, maybe it will be different in the future. I think Egypt must have a good chance in the African Cup of Nations, but I don't know if I will be selected, that is not my choice.

What is your relationship with the three other Egyptian players in England, Ahmed Fathi, Mohamed Shawky and Hossam Ghaly?

Mido: We all get on well.

I consider Mido the most legendary player in Egypt's football history who was able to make this strong impression in both African and European football. What is the secret in that, knowing that majority of Egyptian players they don't survive the harshness of the European professional football levels and they end up returning back to the Egyptian league very soon?

Mido: I don't think there is any secret. I have been lucky to have achieved what I have and to have played where I have, but it takes a lot of work and practice.

Do you think Mohamed Shawky will be a good deal for the Boro?

Mido: Yes. He has shown he is a good player for Egypt and he has trained well here. I think it will take him time to adjust to the game in this country, but I think he will be a good player for the club.

was playing football in Alexandria sporting club, I was a striker too. You are my favourite player in the whole world. I want to be like you so what can I do?

Mido: Work hard, be respectful and listen to good coaches. But always try to enjoy your football.

When you scored past Newcastle you looked really happy with yourself. Did you really enjoy that goal if so why?

How did it feel when you scored your first goal for Boro?

Mido: It is always important to score for your new club. It is a way of thanking the fans for the support they show. It felt really good to score. Every player, especially a striker, wants to score. And yes, I did enjoy scoring in that game, but I always do.

Do you ever get nervous before a match?

Mido: No, I never get nervous before a game.

Who is your best mate in football?

Mido: Probably Robbie Keane, although Ghaly is my friend too.

If Boro are awarded a penalty while you are on the pitch, will you be taking it?

Mido: I will be taking the penalties for Middlesbrough this season

Why did you accept the number nine shirt and what about shirt number 11?

Mido: Number nine is a favourite number of mine and I like wearing the number nine shirt. When I came here nine was available, so I asked if I could have it.

Mido Hit Comeback Trail

Meanwhile, Mido looks unlikely to be available for Sunday's trip to Bolton after missing three of the last four games, most recently with a groin problem.
Crosby says the home game against Aston Villa on Saturday November 24 is a realistic target for the Egyptian striker's return - and he says Boro need him back fit and at his best.
"We haven't seen a lot of Mido and he's not been able to do any training up to now," he said. "We need goals and we need Mido, he's a class player so hopefully we can get him back for the Villa match."

Mido Set To Miss Spurs Reunion

MIDO looks set to miss out on the chance of a reunion with his old Spurs team-mates on Saturday but Robert Huth has joined fellow defender Emanuel Pogatetz on the road back to full fitness.
Egyptian striker Mido, signed from the White Hart Lane side in the summer for £6m, is struggling with the groin injury that kept him out of last weekend's trip to Manchester United.
Gareth Southgate said this afternoon: "I don't think he'll make this week and we've just got to see how he progresses beyond that."It's important we get him fit and firing and ready to come back into the side and make a big impact."We've got to get him fully fit now rather than playing a game, missing a game and keeping aggravating the injury, so we've decided to take him out for a spell, get him fully fit and up to speed."

Wait and see in fitness fight for Mido

BORO will leave it until the last minute before deciding whether Mido is fit enough to face former club Tottenham.
The Egyptian striker was forced out of Boro’s defeat to Manchester United at the weekend with a recurrence of the groin strain which has dogged him recently.
The Gazette understands Mido could be struggling to face Spurs in Saturday’s relegation six-pointer at the Riverside as the niggle continues to cause him problems, but Boro are keeping close tabs on the situation.

Mido will fight toback against his former team

We will give him as long as he needs to be fit against his old club,” said Boro first-team coach Colin Cooper.
Boro are hoping to team Mido up with Jeremie Aliadiere again after the Frenchman scored his first goal for the club at Old Trafford on his return from a hamstring injury.
Tuncay Sanli seems set to continue in a roving role behind the former Arsenal man if Mido fails to make it.
“We want Mido back on the pitch as quickly as possible, now that we’ve got Jeremie off the treatment table,” added Cooper.
“Because I think earlier in the season Mido and Jeremie looked as though they could form a decent partnership.”

Mido's The Man To Deliver The Blues

MARK SCHWARZER has called on Mido to spearhead Boro's attack to another famous win at the Riverside tomorrow.
Avram Grant brings his Chelsea side to Teesside knowing full well that Boro's recent Premiership record over the Blues is as good as it gets.
Five goals and six points from the last two home games represents maximum return for Gareth Southgate's men.

And Boro will be hoping for third time lucky with the Egyptian international pulling the strings.
"Whenever any opposition sees him on the team sheet they are going to be concerned," said Schwarzer.
"He does throw himself about, he does cause trouble, he's a very physical player and defenders don't like playing against him because of that reason.
"He's already scored some crucial goals for us. We need a fit Mido on the pitch, as we do with the rest of the players. The sooner we can do that, the sooner we can move up the table."
With Chelsea not in the best of form, the Australian shot stopper knows Boro must take full advantage.
"They haven't played as well as they have previously

"I think they are in a transitional period with their new manager and he's still finding his feet as other players get to understand and realise the sort of football that he wants to play.
"It's going to be difficult for them but they're top quality side and a top quality squad and whatever team they play, it will be a big test for us."

Egypt handed relatively easy draw in ACN ..

Title holders Egypt have been drawn in a relatively easy group of the 2008 African Cup of Nations, sitting in Group C along with Cameroon, Sudan and Zambia. The Pharaohs, who hold the record for the most ACN triumphs with five titles, take on four-time winners Cameroon in the group opener in Kumasi. In the draw that was held in Ghana capital Accra, the hosts were placed in Group A where they will face Guinea, Namibia and Morocco.2006 runners-up Ivory Coast were paired with two-time winners Nigeria, Benin and Mali in Group B.North African giants Tunisia face a tough task against Senegal, Angola and South Africa in Group D.Sigh of reliefEgypt coach Hassan Shehata will breathe a sigh of relief after learning his opponents in Africa's premier competition.

Despite having to face Indomitable Lions Cameroon in their ACN opener, Egypt won't probably face difficulties in their matches against Sudan and Zambia.Sudan have gone from strength to strength lately but the fact that they will appear in the ACN for the first time in 32 years is likely to make their mission difficult.Zambia failed to make it beyond the group stage since qualifying to the quarter-finals in 1996. They were handed a crushing 4-0 defeat to Egypt two years later. Egypt will be looking to replicate the sort of form and spirit that saw them claim the 2006 competition on home soil after defeating Ivory Coast in penalty shootout.
