3 Match Ban for Mido

BORO have decided not to appeal over Mido's sending off after consulting match ref Mark Halsey and Premier League head of referees Keith Hackett.
The Egyptian striker was sent off soon after coming on as a late substitute in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Arsenal.
Manager Gareth Southgate hoped the decision would be rescinded as Mido appeared to be going for the ball when his foot struck Gael Clichy's head.
But he said today: "Having spoken to the referee's chief and to the referee himself, their feeling is that the decision wouldn't be altered."Whether or not there is intent is no longer considered, it's about whether a challenge puts the opponent in danger."At no time has anybody suggested Mido intended to do what he did, but unfortunately it is perceived as dangerous play because he caught the lad.
"We're not very happy about it but I can see why the referee has sent the lad off under those rules. But a three-match ban is very harsh."

Last month Boro appealed against Jeremie Aliadiere's ban after his dismissal at Liverpool.
The French striker was then hit by a further match ban because the appeal was judged to be "frivolous", taking the suspension to four games.
Mido will miss the vital Premier League games against Derby, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Boro wait for news on Mido ban,Aliadiere believes Mido sending off harsher than his own Anfield dismissal

GARETH Southgate was today nervously waiting to hear if Mido’s controversial red card in the 1-1 draw at Arsenal will be chalked off.
The Boro boss jokingly said he will not try and get the Egyptian’s late straight red at the Emirates overturned after seeing Jeremie Aliadiere’s recent three-match suspension increased to four games due to a “frivolous” appeal.
But he firmly believes the former Tottenham striker should not have walked for his foot-high challenge on Gunners defender Gael Clichy and receive the three-match ban that will come with it.
Southgate, whose stance was backed by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger and Boro goalscorer Jeremie Aliadiere after the battling 1-1 draw, is hoping referee Mark Halsey will perform a U-turn on his decision.
Boro chief excecutive Keith Lamb confirmed the club will not be taking any further action until they receive Halsey’s match report.
And Southgate said Mido’s challenge was more accidental than malicious.
“I don’t think Mido meant it for one minute,” he said. “I must say I thought the ref had a very strong game. I think when he sees it, Clichy gets a nasty cut and he certainly catches him.
“But he is looking at the ball all the way and the lad is distraught because he is not a dirty player.
“He is disappointed that it has been such a nasty injury but he certainly didn’t have any intention.
“The lad has put his head down and I think he is looking at the ball trying to bring it down.
“Hopefully the ref will have a look at it because obviously there is no way we can appeal for anything at the moment.”
Asked if players should make such high challenges, Southgate said: “I’ve seen plenty of players try and control things at that height.
“I just don’t think there was any intent to cause anybody any harm.
“I can’t argue that it’s a horrendous injury.
“But I genuinely feel the lad was trying to play the ball and if Mark feels that differently when he sees it again, then we have to accept that.
“But I think if you look at the lad’s reaction afterwards, there is no anger in his face and no sort of intent.
“He is immediately apologetic that he has caught somebody.”
Southgate said Mido was distraught in the dressing room, adding: “He went straight down to see Clichy and he is obviously disappointed that it is quite a serious knock.
“Mido is devastated because he has not been able to contribute as he would have wanted this season.
“When you saw his face immediately after the challenge you know it’s the reaction of somebody who has caused an accident rather than done anything that was intentional.
“It would be an incredible blow to us if we were to miss him for three weeks for that.
“I think when the referee looks at it, he will be able to see that Mido’s eyes never leave the ball.”
Southgate received an unlikely ally in Wenger, who said: “Funnily enough I don’t think there was any intention there from Mido.
“I maybe didn’t see him, but he hit him on top of his head because he just headed the ball at the moment he wanted to play the ball.
“Personally I didn’t see any bad intention from Mido. I believe the referee gave the red card when he saw the injury, because he was bleeding on the top of his head, but it was very difficult to assess that he wanted to hit him on his head, I don’t think so.”

Former Gunner Aliadiere - who fired Boro ahead against the run of play - felt Mido’s red card was worse than the one he received for slapping Javier Mascherano at Liverpool.
“I think Mido’s red card was even worse than mine to be honest,” he added.
“Hopefully, we will appeal against it and he won’t have to go through what I did.
“I feel sorry for Mido because I know what he is going through.”

Boss Hopes For Change Of Heart

MIDO'S sending off left a black cloud over an excellent performance but Gareth Southgate hopes Mark Hasley will spare Boro's agonies over whether to appeal by rescinding his decision.
The Bolton official received praise from the Boro boss, even though his red card to Mido followed a failure to give a clear foul against George Boateng before the corner that led to Arsenal's equaliser.
Egyptian striker Mido was looking only at the ball when Gael Lichy attempted to head it clear, with the Arsenal defender sustaining a nasty cut in the process.
"I think the referee was strong and I think he's a good referee," said Southgate.
"Okay, the foul decision went against us before the corner, but there were a number of other decisions he might have given."I'm sure when he has a look at the sending off he will probably change his mind.
"It's a horrible cut and Mido has caught the lad, but if you look at it he's looking at the ball all the way through and just trying to bring the ball down.
"Mido is incredibly upset, number one because he doesn't want to hurt someone and number two, he feels getting sent off is a punishment for the team."
With a smiling reference to the extra match and given to Jeremie Aliadiere after Boro previous "frivolous" appeal in the infamous Ali-gate affair, Southgate added: "The question is, 'Do we appeal it?'"

No Egypt call-ups for Mido And Ghaly

Mido and Hossam Ghaly are two noticeable absentees in Hassan Shehata's preliminary Egypt squad for the friendly against Argentina.
The 58-year-old will announce the full squad a week before the March 26 match against the two-time World Cup winners.
However, Shehata has issued early call-ups to players based outside of Egypt - and the Premier League duo's names are not included in the squad.
The Middlesbrough striker missed the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations due to injury, but is not on the best of terms with the Pharaohs boss following a bust-up in 2006.
Ghaly also missed ACN as he was transferred from Tottenham to Derby just before the tournament.
Their absence hardly hampered Egypt as the North African nation stormed to a record sixth ACN title.

Mido: Boro can beat the drop

MIDO is adamant that Boro’s hapless FA Cup quarter-final exit will not be followed by relegation from the Premier League.
The Egypt international was unable to make any impression from the bench as Boro did the walk of shame from the competition in Sunday’s disastrous 2-0 defeat to Championship Cardiff.
A black cloud is circling over Boro’s heads on the back of their spineless defeat, but the former Tottenham striker insists they will quickly get over the hammer blow of missing out on a Wembley trip - and seal their top flight safety.
Gareth Southgate’s demoralised troops are hovering just four points from the relegation zone and face two testing league trips to Aston Villa and Arsenal this week.
Mido admits Boro are one of a batch of sides in demotion danger but stressed that he and his team-mates will not allow the season to spiral out of control.
“If you look at the league now there are at least eight teams who you can say are in trouble,” he said.
“We are still in trouble. We aren’t out of it yet as everyone can see.
“But I think with the quality we have here and with the spirit we have in the dressing room, we will do well.”
To do that, Boro must improve drastically on their aimless reverse to the Bluebirds and Mido reiterated his desire to help spark a revival after missing a large chunk of the season - including his country’s African Nations Cup win - through injury.
The 25-year-old is back after spending more than three months on the sidelines with a pubic bone fracture and raring to make an impact in Boro’s final 10 games.
“I’m not at my best yet but I know I’m going to be there soon with the way I’m working,” he said.
“The most important thing for me is to finish the season well.
“If I do well in the last seven or eight games and score some goals and help the team to get points in the Premier League it will make up for the disappointment of getting injured.
“I’m always trying to do everything for the team and the club and if you ask anyone at our training ground they will tell you how I’m working so hard to get back to my top form.”
Mido has his own strike target and believes club record buy Afonso Alves will have a big say in Boro’s finish. But he has taken the Brazilian to one side to explain that he must learn how to deal with the rough and tumble of English football after arriving from Heerenveen in Holland.
Alves - still waiting for his first Boro goal - was shocked by the ferocity of Chris Morgan’s challenges as Boro beat Sheffield United in their fifth round replay.
But Mido relishes the physical nature of the domestic game, even joking that he would handle the most uncompromising centre-backs on the street.
“I don’t want to underestimate the Dutch league, it’s a very good league for young lads who are talents and coming up and I’ve played there myself,” he said.
“I was lucky enough to play for a massive club like Ajax and win trophies but the pace is a lot faster here and the defenders are tougher.
“Afonso was a little bit surprised in the Sheffield United game when he saw how physical the defenders are.
“After the game we were speaking and I said to him that in this country you face that in every game.
“For me it isn’t a problem because I know about it. Players like John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Kolo Toure at Arsenal are all tough, but if I fight any of these defenders in the street I will take them! But for Afonso it’s been a little bit different so far because he didn’t know. He thought Morgan wanted to hurt him and this is the difference mentally. Afonso needs time to get up to the pace of English football but you can see in training he is a very good signing for us.”
Boro have been linked with VFL Bochum midfielder Daniel Imhof.
The 30-year-old has scored twice in the Bundesliga this season but can leave the German club on a free transfer this summer.

Living The Dream

AHEAD of Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final clash with Cardiff City, Mido believes Boro have earned the right to dream about a Wembley appearance following a pressurising run.
The Egyptian centre-forward, who has not long since returned from a niggling pubic bone injury, feels the pressure of being favourites in every FA Cup game to date means the players have justification in looking ahead to Wembley.
"We're dreaming about it and we deserve to. Some people think that we have had it easy, but it's been difficult for us as the pressure is always on you.
"Playing a lower division side is always going to put pressure on us and we need to respect their quality players, the ones who can finish games. We can't underestimate them but must aim for Wembley," he said.

Mido recognises the magnitude of the match and what it means to supporters and players alike but doesn't think it will be an easy ride come kick-off against David Jones' side.
"It means a lot to all of us, I think most of the players who are playing here haven't the experience of playing at Wembley. I haven't and it's a big challenge for us. It's only 90 minutes but we know that the Cardiff game is going to be tough but very important for the fans and the club," he said.
The summer signing from Spurs stated that if Boro are to make it to Wembley, the fans will play a massive part in getting them there and he's excited at the prospect of a sell-out Riverside crowd roaring on the team.
"It's great to see the fans are back to watch us and it shows a lot of things. Tthey are starting to trust us again, something we lacked at the beginning of the season. We are very happy to see them back and we're going to try and entertain them on Sunday.
"When you see the stadium full we can play a totally different game. They must not underestimate Cardiff and help us get through and get to Wembley," said Mido.
Although Mido is not native to England, he understands the prestige and tradition the FA Cup carries as well as the affection in which the trophy is held.
"I know how big the FA Cup is and the lads here realise how big it is but we're taking it game by game and we know how much it means for the fans," said Mido.

Mido warning for Alves

Mido has warned his fellow Middlesbrough striker Afonso Alves that he will have to get used to the rough and tumble of The Premier League.
Boro shelled out a club record fee to lure Alves to Boro in the January transfer window, but he has yet to show the form which brought him to prominence with Dutch side Heerenveen.
Mido has revealed that Alves sought him out following their FA Cup clash with Sheffield United.

”Afonso came to see me after the last tie against Sheffield United and asked if it was always like this,” Mido told The Daily Express. “I told him he had to expect that sort of defending every week in The Premier League and FA Cup.
”You have to be prepared to fight for every ball as that is what happens here.
”I am not saying they don’t tackle in Dutch football, but over here it is tougher and the pace of the game is much faster.
”Having played at Ajax I know what it is like and Afonso has to adapt his game.
”He is very sharp in training and we have to be patient with him.”

MIDO REVEALS MENTAL STRUGGLE

Mido has revealed the emotional turmoil that compounded the physical pain of his three-month injury lay-off.
The Middlesbrough striker, who returned from a troublesome groin injury just over a month ago, wants an FA Cup winner's medal to end his miserable season on a high.
Mido, 25, has struggled to regain full match-fitness since returning to the first-team squad - there have even been suggestions he had been carrying excess weight.
But ahead of Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final against Coca-Cola Championship side Cardiff, the Egypt international revealed the true extent of his injury woe.
"Some injuries are really more difficult because you don't know when you're going to be back," said the £6million summer signing from Tottenham.
"It was very difficult emotionally and mentally for me.
"Now all I'm trying to do is to play well for the last 10 games of the season and have a good run in the FA Cup.
"If I can do that, I will be very happy."
Mido came through the biggest test of his match fitness in the last round of the cup against Sheffield United, playing the entire two hours (double check) of a fifth-round replay that went to extra-time.
"It was a big test for me to play two hours," he said, admitting he was "knackered" at the end of the game.
"My injury this season has been a big disappointment for me, especially the timing.
"I have missed the African (Nations) Cup and have missed an important period with the club.
"It came after I started to play well."
Indeed, Mido's Boro career could have hardly begun more brightly, the striker netting in his opening two games for the club.
He has failed to find the net since his return, although it was his shot that forced the decisive error from Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny in the previous cup tie.
"Of course I'm not in top form but I'm fighting to get back in top form," Mido added.
"I'm doing everything possible on the training ground to get back in my best form. But it's not easy when you've been injured for three or four months."
A fit and firing Mido would be a huge asset in Boro's dual aim of securing Barclays Premier League survival and winning the FA Cup for the first time.
"To win the cup would be massive for us," Mido said.
"We're really dreaming about it and I think we deserve to dream about it."
He added: "I've been in England now more than three years and I know how big the FA Cup is.
"I think most of the lads here, even the new lads, know how big it is.
"It will be great for us to get to the final or to the semi-final."
Mido is all too aware victory tomorrow will give him and many of his team-mates their first taste of the new Wembley.
"It means a lot to all of us," he explained.
"Most of the players playing here haven't experienced playing at Wembley and I haven't as well, so it's a challenge for us."
