Mido insists his weight-loss regime is paying off

Chunky Middlesbrough striker Mido is following his former Spurs team-mates in slimming down.
The Egypt striker lends a heavyweight presence to Boro but insists his weight-loss regime is paying off.
Tottenham boss Juande Ramos credits the Carling Cup win to strict new healthy-eating rules that helped his squad lose almost 16 stone between them.
Mido, who moved to Teesside in August, said: "A lot's been said of the Spurs players losing a lot of weight since Ramos came in and the diet he put them on. I've lost a lot of weight too. I don't want to say how much but I've been doing a lot of work on the training ground and I'm on a hard, tough diet.
"I'm trying to lose another two or three kilos but don't have to lose them quickly. My weight isn't a problem and I believe I am proving that now by my performances."

Mido has sights on Wembley

EGYPTIAN striker Mido wants to prove he has won his battle with the bulge by firing Middlesbrough to a Wembley date in his first season on Teesside.
The 25-year-old's injury-time shot, thanks to some misfortune from Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, was responsible for securing Boro's place in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday night.
Mido feels his performance showed he is over the worst of the concerns which have weighed him down in recent weeks.
alarmed the club's coaching staff when he piled on the pounds during a four-month injury lay-off due to a pubic bone injury.
But, after working away on the training ground, Mido is confident he has shed the fat, which will help him to find his feet in the Premier League again.
"I have lost a lot of weight,"
said Mido, likely to start on the bench against Reading tomorrow.
"I don't want to say how much weight I have lost but I have been doing a lot of work on the training ground and I've been on a very hard diet.
"For sportsmen and athletes it is very different to anyone else when you want to lose weight.
You cannot diet like normal people.
"You have got to train, you have got to play games and that means you need a lot of energy.

"A normal person can cut out the carbo-hydrates. As a footballer, you can't do that so it has been very tough for me to lose weight.
"Now I am trying to lose another two or three kilos but I don't have to lose them quickly. I can lose that weight quite slowly.
"I don't want to push it. Having said that, Wednesday's game will certainly help. I think I've lost a lot more than that in just two hours. But my weight is not a problem."
With Jeremie Aliadiere sidelined through suspension, Dong- Gook Lee injured and Afonso Alves withdrawn after 73 minutes, Mido had to play 90 minutes and then 30 minutes of extra-time against the Blades.
And, in the 113th minute, he still had the energy to deliver the shot which led to United keeper Kenny palming the match-winner into his own net.
"I'm just happy we are through and so happy I could play 120 minutes.
It is always very difficult when you have not played for so long but I p r o v e d something out there,"
said Mido, who had not started and finished a game since October 20.
"I was ready to play the whole game. It is not like a few weeks ago, when I probably needed to come off before the end.
"At no stage did I think I was going to be taken off. In fact the longer the game went on, the better I felt."
The marginal victory means that Middlesbrough have sealed a quarter-final tie with another Championship outfit, Cardiff City, a week on Sunday.
Victory at the Riverside Stadium will send Middlesbrough to Wembley for the semi-finals and within reach of a UEFA Cup place.
"It would be special to reach Wembley," he said. "It would be a great experience for everyone. It is a stadium you dream to play in.
"We said before the repaly it might be a tough game but we had to battle because we are all dreaming about winning this Cup.
"Anything can happen in this competition and I really believe that we have a very good chance.
"It could turn into an incredible season for us after a very tough start. I think the gaffer has done really well in the way he has managed everything in the club.
"He is a young manager but has done everything you would expect an experienced manager to do and I am very happy for him. He will just get better and better."
Middlesbrough's progress in the FA Cup means that next weekend's trip to Aston Villa has been rescheduled for March 12, kick-off 7.45pm.
Luke Young will miss the last eight tie with Cardiff after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season on Wednesday.

Middlesbrough boss: Mido special player

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate is eager to call on again his "special player" Mido.

Southgate said: "I think he's worked incredibly hard over the last two and a half weeks. He's worked hard on his fitness, he's looked brighter in training and he looked brighter in the game.

"He's a special player and we've been without that talent for most of the season, which has been difficult for the team."

Mido Praises Team Spirit

FIT again striker Mido says Boro's new found team spirit earned a replay in a game they could easily have lost had it been played earlier in the season. After three months sidelined through injury, the 24-year-old was starting a game for the first time in four months on Sunday.
The Egypt international was delighted to be back playing in an FA Cup sponsored by E.ON fifth round which brought a few surprises - and a cautious Middlesbrough side were glad not to add to the ever growing list of Premier League casualties.

We knew it would be a tough game, we were expecting them to be in our faces," said Mido. "Sheffield United did well, fighting for every ball, we did the same and now we play them at home in the replay but it won't be an easy game."
Mido believes that Sunday's result was down to the recently found spirit within the squad.
"Maybe earlier in the season we would have lost a game like this, but with the team character we have everyone is fighting for everything and you can see the spirit on the pitch."
Mido felt could have won the game after coming close to scoring seveal times in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but some good saves by keeper Paddy Kenny kept United in the tie.

"Looking at the chances we created we could have won the game, but it's not a bad result. We were a bit unlucky with a volley from Stewey and the last minute header from Poggy."
A huge army of Boro fans made the trip down to Bramall Lane and they did not go unnoticed by Mido and the team, who were grateful for terrific backing.
"It was great to see 6,000 Boro supporters there. The supporters are behind us more than before because they can see we are fighting for everything and each other."
Mido, who played 70 minutes of Sunday's game, is grateful to Boro's backroom staff for their hard work in getting him back to fitness.
"The medical staff have been working with me every day. I only need games now to get match fitness and sharpness. In a couple of games I will be much better."
After missing much of the season through injury and undergoing some rigorous work on the training ground, Mido is back in the frame and again in contention for a place in the starting line-up against Liverpool on Saturday.

Mido : I’ll be back to my best soon

MIDO believes he will be back to his sharp-shooting best for Boro in the next few weeks after coming close to a comeback cracker in the FA Cup at Sheffield United.
The Egyptian’s audacious overhead kick brought a fingertip save from goalkeeper Paddy Kenny as Boro pressed in the second half of yesterday’s fifth round goalless draw at Bramall Lane.

And after going within an outstretched palm of grabbing a spectacular winner in his first start in almost four months, the Boro striker reckons he will soon be hitting the back of the net on a regular basis.

The Cairo-born forward made a blistering start to his Boro career with goals in his first two games but has suffered from injury since, with a stress fracture of the pubic bone ruling him out since October.

His tidy 70-minute shift in South Yorkshire followed a couple of appearances from the bench and Mido says the good times will soon be rolling for him again as he gets up to full match fitness back.

“I thought I was Marco van Basten for a moment with the overhead kick, the keeper made a good save,” he said.

“I hope to score some goals and get myself fit for the last 10 games.
“I think I started very well when I first signed and the injury has been a big blow for me.
“It’s the worst injury that I’ve had, even worse than anything in your knee because you can’t do anything.

“Because every time you jog you put pressure on the injured area.
“But these things happen in your career and you have to get on with it.
“I’ve worked very hard with the physios and yesterday you could see it was a bit better for me.

“I’m sure the next couple of games will get me back to top form.”
United had much of the game as they rose to the task in their first outing under caretaker boss Kevin Blackwell.
But Boro created three great chances through Mido and a Stewart Downing volley and saw Emanuel Pogatetz’s last gasp header cleared off the line.
Mido said the Championship Blades were every bit as sharp as he expected them to be.
And although he feels they will be hard to beat in next Tuesday’s replay, he believes Boro have the togetherness and quality to bank a win that will move them into the quarter finals.

Boro are now unbeaten in their last eight and the 24-year-old said: “We knew it was always going to be a tough game, we were expecting them to be in our faces. Sheffield United did well and fought for every ball and we did the same.

“Now we are going to get them back at home in the replay. I still don’t think it’s going to be an easy game. But we’ve been doing very well as a squad and haven’t lost in a while now.
“I think at the beginning of the season we may have lost a game like Sheffield United but we have got character in the team and you can see the spirit in the dressing room on the pitch.”

Mido also thanked the massive turnout of 6,000 Boro fans who got behind him and their side and said it was pleasing to give them something to shout about on the pitch in the shape of their recent run.
“The fans have been great with me and it was great to see 6,000 Boro supporters coming down,” he said. “I think the supporters are behind us now more than any time before this season because they can see that we are fighting for everything. They can see players fighting for each other and that pleases the crowd most.”

Boro boss Gareth Southgate hailed his side’s stubborn display and added: “We’ve come through unscathed and in 10 away games we’ve suffered only one defeat. We’re not giving much away, which is giving us a platform to build on.”

Boro midfielder Josh Walker played the last 20 minutes of Aberdeen’s 3-1 defeat at Hibernian yesterday in his latest game on loan at the SPL side.

Mido : Boro safe under Southgate

Middlesbrough striker Mido has enthused over Gareth Southgate’s managerial abilities in an interview with Setanta Sports News and is fully confident that the club will be spared the torture of a relegation battle come the end of the season.
Southgate is currently in his second season as a manager but has already been forced to endure the pointed barbs of critics and the rigmarole of battling at the lower end of the Premier League table.

Whilst no less a football authority than Arsene Wenger has spoken of his admiration for Southgate in the past, he still divides opinion as a manager and is fortunate to work under the patient figure of chairman Steve Gibson in what is becoming a more cut-throat Premier League by the season.

Mido – signed from Tottenham at the start of the season – is a firm admirer of the manager and believes that Boro will flourish under his guidance as they currently sit seven points clear of the relegation zone after going unbeaten since New Year’s Day.

“He knows what he is doing,” said Mido on Setanta Sports News. “It is true he is young and hasn’t been in the business for so long.
“But the way he manages the team has been great so far and I don’t think we will even be close to relegation. I think we will do really well.”

Mido faces new delay in fitness battle

BORO will give Egyptian striker Mido another month to get himself back on track.
Gareth Southgate is determined not to rush the 24-year-old, despite him being unable to reach full fitness as hoped last month.
Boro are putting Mido through a rigorous training schedule at Rockliffe Park and the striker is getting stuck into the task.
Assistant boss Malcolm Crosby told the Evening Gazette today: “Mido is working very hard in training and I have seen a big improvement in him over the last couple of weeks.
“If he continues to work at this rate then it might be another few weeks.
“He is going to be in decent shape at the end of it and hopefully he will be pushing for his place in no more than a month or so.
“We need all our players fit. We need competition for places.”
Boro were dismayed that Mido put on weight as he battled to recover from an abdominal injury.
He has not started a game since October and his absence has left Boro without a recognised centre-forward for four months.
The deadline-day signing of Afonso Alves had gone a long way to solving the problem, though the Brazilian is still short of fitness himself.
Ironically Alves will achieve full fitness around the same time as Mido, while Tuncay will also be back from a hamstring injury.
Mido has shed some unwanted weight over the past few weeks and will come back hopefully leaner and hungrier.
But, instead of being an automatic choice as he was before, he will now join a battle for forward places as Southgate looks forward to his healthiest situation up front since the end of last season.
Crosby said: “You can’t have too many strikers to choose from so it’s an ideal situation for us.
“We have competition elsewhere in the team and we need strong competition up front as well.”

Mido: It's time to halt the sick jibes

Boro striker Mido has asked Newcastle fans not to taunt him with sick chants during the Tyne-Tees derby.
The Egyptian striker was abused with vile taunts from the 3,000 Geordie supporters at the Riverside.
It provoked the fury of Boro boss Gareth Southgate, especially when Mido was booked for holding his finger to his mouth to tell the away fans to shut it after he scored. Mido also produced a two-finger salute in the game.
Newcastle fans angrily disputed accusations of racism after the incident.

Mido said: "Hopefully we won't hear the same chants again because it's silly and should absolutely be kept out of everyday life and that includes football. I hope we don't hear it again. It's not only about me, it's about everyone.
"If they do start chanting again I'll make sure I keep my head calm and aim to do well for the team.

"It's terrible when you hear people making chants about race, colour, religion or whatever. If you see what is happening now in England you do not normally hear that sort of stuff in everyday life.
"Now people are starting to understand that there is no difference between people and that everyone is doing their best in their own walks of life. There is no difference between the religions and colours and everyone should understand that.
"I wouldn't say that if I do hear it that it would increase my determination or my efforts. I just hope if we do hear it again the Football Association takes the right decisions.
"I will go to Newcastle and I just plan to play my football and I hope to do well and score goals."
